What is 3D Scanning

3D scanning is a technology that has emerged from the need to capture data of a physical thing. This job is well performed with the help of 3D scanners.

The purpose of the 3D scanner is to collect the physical details of an object which may include its, shape, size, texture, color, etc., 

 Various types of scanners are available in the market to meet the requirements of inspection, 

 

Classification of 3D scanners

3D scanners can be classified based on the following factors

  1. The technology used to scan

    i) Photogrammetry: In this technique, we take many pictures of the object from various directions. Software is used to analyze the data and helps in stitching all the pictures in such a way that the 3d point cloud data is derived. This 3d model is now available for further conversion to CAD

    ii) Laser Scanning: This is the latest and the most accurate way of capturing 3d data. In this method, light is cast onto an object. A camera records the intersection point of the beam with the object. This way the point cloud data of the object is estimated. Laser scanners are very efficient in measuring accuracy up to 15 microns.

    iii) LiDAR scanning: In this type of scanner, light is emitted in various directions and the returning light is captured to assess the shape of the environment. It is used in terrestrial data capturing.

    2. Shape of scanner

    i) Hand-held scanners: These scanners are handy to carry and help in measuring small objects. They are used for scanning the human body or organs which facilitate in creating 3d models for the healthcare industry

    ii)  Arm scanners: These scanners are in the form of connected arms. They help in scanning large components of automobile and aerospace

     

    The purpose of 3d scanning may be inspection, prototyping of legacy parts, or bringing the details of a clay model onto a computer. There are different kinds of scanners available for accomplishing different tasks. The final goal is to get a virtual 3d model.
